Introducing a design process to a hyperlocal news app

SeeAround me, or SAM, as I like to call it, is a hyperlocal news sharing platform that started as a side project for the founder.  It lets users discover and share interesting things such as events and fun restoraunts in a desired proximity.

Challenge

SAM is an app with tons of potential but lacking a design process. When the founder came to us, he realized that building a product without understanding the user was causing low sign up and retention. The biggest challenge for this product was to determine who the main user would be, how they would use the app, and communicate value in the onboarding process.

With the goal of reaching as many potential users as possible, I formed screener surveys and distributed them through various social media channels. Using the JTBD approach, I held user interviews to determine our target persona and narrow down our user base. The following phase of the project focused on the design process and creating a new onboarding experience that communicated value and helped with user retention.

As a design lead, I conducted market research, formulated surveys, interviewed existing as well as target users, and analyzed results to drive the design process. I led a team through several design ideations and delivered the final onboarding design to the founder with positive feedback.
